David Gottfried is a catalyst for transformation. His work has impacted the global building industry more than almost any other. He founded the nonprofit U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) in 1993 to formalize the definition and adoption of green building practices via the first green building industry coalition in the world. He also crafted the vision and model for the LEED® green building rating system-now in use in 140 countries worldwide. In 1998, David expanded his vision globally by founding the World Green Building Council (WorldGBC), now with GBCs existing or forming in more than 100 countries. Together, the USGBC and WorldGBCs have arguably saved more CO2 than any entities in the world.
David’s career spans 30 years serving the global building industry. His experience includes real estate development, construction management, building ownership and property management, strategic consulting, network management and venture start-ups. He earned his degree in Engineering Management from Stanford University, where he serves as a regular lecturer.
His numerous leadership awards include the 2011 inaugural WorldGBC Global Green Building Entrepreneurship Award, presented “for his distinguished lifetime achievement and contribution to the development and growth of the global green building industry.” The Award is now given out annually in Gottfried’s name. The Northern California USGBC also awards its annual Super Hero Special Achievement Award in David’s name.
He was named an ENR top 25 newsmaker, received a lifetime achievement award from the Building Industry Conference Board, is a Senior Fellow of the Design Futures Council, and is a Senior Advisor to the China Green Building Council. David sits on the advisory boards of about ten venture-backed green building start-ups. He has published three influential books, Greed to Green, Greening My Life and his latest book Explosion Green. David’s former residence was the highest rated LEED Platinum home in the world. He recently expanded his creativity into modern art painting. His work combines many elements of nature, light, relationship duality and hope.
